Deen is a graphic artist at PopTop. He is the person who designed all the characters you see on the character's page. Here is his experience in computer gaming and how he came to be an employee at PopTop: (in his own words)
When I was little, my brother (Timothy) programmed some small graphics
programs for me to putz around with, so that was my introduction to computer
graphics. CGA pixel-pushing (Literally- I made little icons and pictures by
working a pixel at a time.)
He got involved with some friends making a computer games part-time. When
they needed graphics, they grabbed me as cheap labor. Very basic amateurish
stuff. They eventually left for Dallas while I finished high school.
I got involved with another part-time game-development thing with some local
guys. I was getting better, but it was still basic 2D by-hand pixel-pushing in
Deluxe-Paint (IIe). They eventually left for Austin while I finished college.
I transferred to Denton, TX (just north of Dallas) to finish
college. =) My brother's group had since failed, but he got involved with
another new start-up (as of yet not named Ensemble Studios), and so he put in a
good word with me and I started doing 2D icon-work for them while I went to
school, doing about 10 hours of work a week on a little game called Age of
Empires. I was the original first artist, the one that made the palette that
got used in the game, set the basic look and feel, yadi yadi yadi. But I didn't
really DO a whole lot. I eventually left for marriage while they finished the
game. =)
I moved to St. Louis with my wife so she could pursue her PhD. I looked for
a local game company to join, but couldn't find any. So I started working at a
local movie theatre. A couple months later, my brother (the one in Dallas)
forwarded me an email a roommate of his had gotten from a company in St. Louis
that needed artists. So I danced around a minute, then applied, got accepted,
and did clean-up work in the final months of Railroad Tycoon II. THEN I finally
got around to learning 3D in my spare time here at PopTop, and Tropico will be
the first game I've worked on start to finish, and the first one in which I've
done real in-game artwork on an extensive scale.
Deen's involvement with Railroad Tycoon 2:
Role on the project: World Artist: train clean up (the Train Man), logos, b/w cursors, some ground effects and beach animation
Favorite thing about the game: The ability to merge in multiplayer—the closest thing to conquering your enemy in battle!
Favorite strategy: Don’t play against Phil. Otherwise, expand and act fast to get the best start. Don’t be afraid to crowd into someone else’s city and steal their passengers.
Memorable moment during development: We finally started to test multiplayer. I thought I was doing decently and suddenly —BAM!— Franz merged and took me over!
Crunch Time food: No snack, just lots and lots of diet Coke. Well, OK, Cheese Nips aren’t bad either.
Things to avoid during crunch time: Not taking the time to occasionally do other stuff like go swimming, read a book, or otherwise get out the RT2 world to "reboot."
Favorite game besides RT2: Civilization

Poptop's Franz Felsl will be joining a chat session on November 11th at 2 p.m. MST, hosted by Railroad Express.
Felsl is a graphic artist and designer at PopTop. He has been very involved in the Tropico community. You will often find his posts on various forums and message boards. I am not sure how he became involved in gaming or what his role is in developing Tropico, but will try to find out.
Felsl's involvement with Railroad Tycoon 2:
Role on the project: Research, scenario design, and maps
Favorite thing about the game: Setting up pretty train rides through the mountains that waste your precious time. I enjoy the "train set" type put n’ play ability that lets you build a model railroad. I don’t have room at home for a train set, so this is my best alternative.
Favorite strategy: I like to buy everyone’s industries just as they place their stations. AFTER they place their station is the key, as it indicates an investment on your competitors part. Also, whenever possible I try and buy up all my own stock, often taking bonds out to buy up company stock with company money. This makes you a very hard target for a hostile merge.
Memorable moment during development: I was working late and there was a storm moving in from the northeast. I was going through an event bug list trying to find a coat for the Queen of Austria. Well, one thing lead to another and then...hey wait! This isn’t amusing or interesting. Is this thing on?
Crunch Time food: Little Debbie™ Swiss Rolls. A lot of snout for a little cash.
Things to avoid during crunch time: Sweep
Favorite game besides RT2:Fallout, Transportation Tycoon, Defender of the Crown, Masters of Magic
